” It feels good to work off of intuition…I found through this body of work that letting go of what I want something to be and allowing it space to grow into what it instinctively chooses to become is how I find meaning and pride in my creations. “
Observation Deck
This body of work came into being because I was interested in creating a sort of visual language. Unsure of how to begin, my work was reluctant and indecisive, taking every line I drew and every idea I had far too seriously. It wasn’t until I really stripped my ideas down to their simplest form – basic 2D shapes – that I was able to find meaning and let the shapes push me in the direction they wanted to go.
It feels good to work off of intuition. I think I found through this body of work that letting go of what I want something to be and allowing it space to grow into what it instinctively chooses to become is how I find meaning and pride in my creations.
I think that somewhere along the line – probably a little over halfway through creating this body of work – I shifted my goal of exploring a sort of visual language to working with less attachment for the result of my work, not worrying about what I was creating. Allowing myself to work as automatically as I possibly could gave my work the freedom of direction it required. To some end, there wasn’t a huge shift in what I was actually making, but I allowed my focus to shift off of my initial goal, and in doing so experienced the inventive bliss that pushed this work to where it needed to be. That’s what Observation Deck is to me. The exploration and discovery of the infinite gradation these shapes allow me to take them to.
