” Optics provide me with a shield, searching behind the viewfinder gives me the courage to embrace [my subjects].”
Pilgrimage
I am a stranger in the country of my heritage, I am a stranger in the country that I have been born into. Pilgrimage is my exploration of these environments and finding my place within them. The grains of silver halide particles in their swathes of sweeping ink blacks and the ranges of gray distinctly display my practice of space between you and the objectified subject. Like looking through a window that is not mine to look into. My awkwardness, the uncomfortable fear of isolation and my yearning for identity are reflected onto these windowpanes. My work features portraits, some of which are complete strangers, some that are close to me, and some that are even absent of figures. My subjects are intimately connected and implicate my anxieties. Optics provide me with a shield, searching behind the viewfinder gives me the courage to embrace them. Space acts as a tool, helping me convey the poignancy of distance relative to the subject.
